MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is one of the birthplaces of modern molecular biology and has played an important role in the development of many new techniques, most notably X-ray crystallography of proteins, DNA sequencing and monoclonal antibodies.  The LMB has a clear goal of understanding biological processes at the molecular level, with the ultimate aim of using this knowledge to tackle specific problems in human health and disease.  We aim to tackle difficult, long-term problems, which often require investment over many years.

There are four scientific Divisions - Structural Studies, Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry, Cell Biology and Neurobiology.  However, scientific collaboration between the different Divisions is extensive.  Scientists are well supported by excellent scientific facilities and by the LMB Operations Group which maintains the core infrastructure and services of the institute.

With the new laboratory the LMB provides an unsurpassed environment for both new and established researchers.  Scientists are drawn to the LMB from all over the world, thus creating a lively and international community for the exchange of ideas and technical innovation.

Overall purpose:

You will be a member of the Estates and Facilities team at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) working as a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Technician. You will be responsible for the electrical and mechanical servicing and repairs at the prestigious state of the art LMB building and at other MRC sites within the Cambridge region.

Main duties/Key responsibilities:

•  Your duties will include electrical/mechanical planned & preventive maintenance (PPM), daily checks of all major plant and the monitoring of computer-controlled Building Management Systems (BMS) for electrical, heating and ventilation equipment, plus repairs and minor installation works.

•  Operation of steam boilers/systems is required as steam is used extensively throughout our sites. Training will be given if required.

•  You will extensively use the complex BMS to monitor plant and equipment.  This will involve assessing the situation from the information available and taking appropriate action.

•  You will liaise with external units to discuss, agree and evaluate minor refurbishment works.

•  You will undertake various electrical and mechanical works on behalf of the Estates & Facilities Section.  This will include supervising external service providers.

•  The most challenging aspects of the job are to interrogate complex BMS systems and take the appropriate action.

Working relationships:

You will report to the Services Coordinator and will be part of the Estates and Facilities team.

You will need to interact effectively with not only staff at the LMB, but also with staff at other MRC sites within the Cambridge region.

You will need to be able to effectively communicate with scientific users and service providers.

You will need to establish the needs of the users and communicate these both orally and through written specifications to those carrying out the work.

You will not have any line management responsibilities.

Additional information:

The workload is varied and priorities can change at short notice.

You will be required to undertake on call duties, this will cover approximately 7 weeks per annum.

Education / qualifications / training required:

Essential:
•  Completed a recognised Electrical or Mechanical Apprenticeship or hold the equivalent qualifications.
•  Hold a full UK driving licence.

Desirable:
•  Formal Health & Safety qualifications/ability to undertake risk assessments.
•  BOAS (Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme) certificate.

Previous work experience required:

Essential:
•  A working knowledge of engineering services coupled with a good understanding of all aspects of building maintenance.
•  Experience of Steam Systems.

Desirable:
•  Experience in a scientific environment.
•  Supervision of external contractors.

Knowledge and experience:
 
Essential: Competent IT skills including Microsoft Office.

Desirable:
•  Experience of BMS (Building Management System).
•  Experience of estimating correct quantity of materials to complete minor works.

Independent working
Essential:
•  Ability to work as part of a team or independently.
•  Ability to work without or under limited supervision.

Verbal and written communication skills
Essential: Ability to effectively communicate with scientific users and service providers, establishing the needs of the users and communicate these both orally and through written specifications to those carrying out the work.

•  Ability to adapt as the workload is varied and priorities can change at short notice.
•  Ability to plan and prioritise work with the minimum of supervision.

•  Ability to be flexible is required as on call cover is required and may be off site.
