Histopathologist/Laboratory Manager - TOX - 172
The Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit, located at the University of Leicester, is an internationally renowned institution focussed on the delivery of field-changing mechanistic insights into toxicology and disease. The histology unit is expanding, and houses state-of-the art facilities for research histological methods.
We are looking to appoint a Histopathologist/Laboratory Manager to provide specialist histology support to the laboratory of Dr John Le Quesne and to serve the general histology needs of other research groups within the MRC Toxicology Unit.
- Perform histology procedures and techniques including optimisation and utilisation of novel research methodologies and technologies, such as the construction and processing of tissue microarrays (TMAs) and laser capture microdissection.
- Management of the Unit’s histology facility: carrying out a wide range of specialised techniques including processing/microtomy of tissue sections and a full range of manual and automated staining, histochemical and immunohistochemical procedures.
- Ensure the effective maintenance of equipment and appropriate levels of consumables for both the histology laboratory and dissection rooms.
- Ensure the laboratory meets H&S requirements, maintaining detailed records of all samples, particularly those of human origin, for scientific, ethical and legal reasons.
- Provide advice to staff at all levels regarding the most appropriate histopathological approach.
- Assist with the interpretation of the resulting preparations.
- Co-ordinate and prioritise the demands of the various programmes and monitor output to ensure reliable, high quality results.
- Train and supervise any work undertaken in the histopathology laboratory and ensure the facility is maintained to a high standard.
Education / Qualifications / Training required:
Essential:
- Educated to degree level or equivalent in Biomedical Science
- NHS biomedical science training in histopathology, or an equivalent level of research experience
Desirable:
Higher degree in an area of research involving tissue skills
Previous work experience required:
Essential:
- FFPE tissue preparation and handling
- Microtomy including serial paraffin and cryostat sectioning
- Immunohistochemistry
- Cell pellet preparation/sectioning
- Histochemical special stains
Desirable:
- Tissue Microarray construction
- Immunofluorescence
- In situ hybridisation
- Multiplex immunoassays
- Automated immunostaining/multispectral imaging
Personal skills/behaviours/qualities:
Essential:
- Ability to give expert advice regarding the choice and optimisation of histological technologies to researchers at all levels *
- Ability to manage and organise resources and ensure work is correctly prioritised to optimise workflow across the various research groups *
- Enthusiasm to learn and optimise new procedures and techniques *
