Research Assistant/Phenotyper - MLC - 377
Overall purpose:
To perform a comprehensive range of regulated procedures for the Phenotyping service at the Mary Lyon Centre. A range of clients use this service from large high throughput programs to single tests for individual researchers.
This includes both invasive and non-invasive animal testing, animal husbandry, data collection and data analysis.
Main duties / key responsibilities:
Husbandry - Animal care, colony management, basic and advanced husbandry tasks, health and welfare monitoring.
Phenotyping - Performing a wide range of regulated procedures for both scientific groups and international phenotyping program; communication with external clients.
Key responsibilities:
Data collection- Collating, recording and uploading phenotyping data into LIMS databases, spreadsheets and programs appropriate for data capture.
Data Analysis- Downloading, collating and performing critical quality control analysis on phenotyping data. Able to use statistical packages to interpret data.
Working relationships:
Scientific Head (project and line manager), Phenotyping manager (project manager), external scientists
Essential:
GCSE Maths or equivalent. Genetics training and knowledge
Experience of working within a team environment related to science
Wide range of phenotyping procedures; able to follow very strict SOPs; contribute to their review; ability to work precisely and accurately with an eye for detail. Good computer literacy
Reliable and able to work flexibly and to a tight deadline. Acute attention to detail
Desirable:
Further biology qualifications e.g. BSc
Advanced husbandry experience, especially of mice
Ability to critically review data and detect changing trends, outliers and potential data collection problems by reviewing data. Must be familiar with statistical packages
Ability to critically review data and work processes
