Overall purpose:

 

The Germline and Pluripotency Group headed by Dr Harry Leitch studies germline development and pluripotency, using a range of in vivo and in vitro approaches in rodents and human (https://lms.mrc.ac.uk/research-group/germline-and-pluripotency/).

Based on the Hammersmith Hospital Campus in West London (W12), the LMS has first class facilities and provides investigators from clinical and basic science backgrounds with the opportunity to pursue innovative, multidisciplinary research within the established clinical base of Imperial College.

 

Main duties / key responsibilities:

  • Research contributions to the core program of the Germline and Pluripotency Group, including project development
  • Contribute to aspects of laboratory infrastructure, development of experimental protocols and training of staff and students.
  • Provide advice and information to PhD students in the group as required.

 

The appointee will:

1)    Develop research projects as part of the group’s core programme


1)    Analyse, manage, communicate and publish data


2)    Take an active part in the academic activities of the Germline and Pluripotency group including lab meetings, training and organisational aspects


3)    Take an active part in the academic activities of the LMS, including journal clubs and seminar presentations, and where appropriate to present data at national and international scientific meetings


4)    Actively contribute to the training and supervision of junior members of the lab including PhD and MSc/MRes students

This post is an MRC Postdocotral Scientist to support post-doctoral training and help establish successful research scientists in their chosen field. During the fellowship tenure we are committed to provide mentorship for career development and improvement of communication skills. Education / Qualifications / Training required:

Essential:

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline
  • Basic training in bioinformatics or a related discipline

Desirable:

  • UK Home Office personal licence (PIL) for work with rodents


Previous work experience required:


Essential:


  • Extensive experience in human pluripotent stem cell culture techniques
  • Experience in derivation of human induced pluripotent stem cells
  • Experience planning and completing an independent research project
  • Experience in computational biology / bioinformatics

Desirable:


  • Experience in mouse embryo dissection or embryonic stem cell derivation
  • Immunofluorescence techniques, flow cytometry, confocal imaging
  • Knowledge of applications of statistics in genomics or genetics
  • Knowledge of resources for gene and variant annotation and prioritisation
  • Evidence of proficiency working with Linux command line interface tools
  • Proficiency in at least one general programming language
  • Experience working with NGS data, ideally including human germline DNA
  • Experience working with High Performance Computing


Knowledge and experience:


Essential:


  • Mammalian development
  • Pluripotent stem cell biology
  • Genetics/epigenetics, preferably human

Desirable:


  • Germline biology – such as PGC development, gametogenesis or assisted reproductive technology
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals, including first-author papers
  • Presentations at scientific conferences

Personal skills/behaviours/qualities:


Essential:


  • Evidence of organisational ability
  • Open communicator
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with researchers ranging from postgraduate students to professorial level
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to work out of normal working hours (including weekends) if the requirements of the project demand
  • The ability and willingness to learn new concepts and technologies rapidly.


*Salary quoted is inclusive of London weighting. Additional allowances comprise a £1,000 lump sum Settlement Allowance plus a yearly Training Allowance of £850 in the first year, paid in monthly instalments. The Training Allowance increases to £1,300 in year two, and £1,800 in the year three.
