Overall purpose:

To work with scientific researchers, in order to look after the health and welfare of colonies of experimental mice. This work includes animal handling, daily husbandry duties and keeping accurate computerised records. All work is governed by the local Ethical Committee and the Home Office under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act. 

Main duties / key responsibilities:

•           Checking the health and welfare of experimental mice

•           Cleaning and watering of animal cages

•           Setting up matings

•           Weaning young stock

•           Culling mice at the end of experiments

•           Addressing the welfare needs of mouse colonies

•           Maintaining cleanliness in the animal rooms

•           Computerised record keeping

•           Reading and adhering to SOPs and risk assessments 

Working relationships:  

Member of a team working under supervision of senior personnel 

Additional information: 

Must be able to work overtime to cover animal requirements

Essential:

5 GCSE’s at grade C or above (or equivalent)

Relevant experience of the Home Office requirement for a licence – training will be given to acquire this if the post holder does not already fulfil requirements

Good communications skills

Attention to detail

Genuine interest in the welfare of animals

Basic computer skills

Experience of working as part of a team

Able to work as part of a team and work under the supervision of senior personnel

 

Desirable:

Home Office Licence

Basic animal husbandry

Experience of working to SOPs

Experience of computerised record keeping
