The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) is an independent scientific organisation, tasked by Government with supporting the UK science base through the application of the 3Rs (the replacement of animal experiments with alternatives, reduction in the number of animals used, and refinement of procedures and animal husbandry to minimise suffering).

The NC3Rs funds high quality research which has the potential to reduce animal use and/or improve animal welfare, develops 3Rs information resources and guidelines, and organises symposia and workshops. It has a range of stakeholders including academic and industry scientists, research funders, regulators, government, veterinarians and animal care staff, the public and the media. The NC3Rs has a long-standing collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry and this is a new post to support the evolution of the partnership, focusing on the 3Rs in drug development. The post is funded by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) for two years and complements other roles in the NC3Rs including the existing APBI-funded post which focuses on disease models, safety pharmacology and efficacy.

The Programme Manager will work closely with companies and regulatory bodies. The primary role will be to initiate and lead specific 3Rs programmes relating to the use of animals in drug development. This will include leading expert working groups; organising workshops and other events; data collation and analysis; and preparing papers for publication.

Additional responsibilities will include (as appropriate), supporting the NC3Rs Chief Executive with policy and strategy development; representing the NC3Rs at various events nationally and internationally; horizon scanning for scientific, business and regulatory developments and drivers relevant to the 3Rs; and advising on research requirements relevant to the 3Rs in drug development which may be supported through the NC3Rs funding schemes and open innovation programme CRACK IT.

The post is within the NC3Rs Innovation and Translation Group and the ability to work as part of a dynamic team is essential.

Education, qualifications and training

Essential:

  • PhD in a biological science, ideally toxicology.

Previous work experience

Essential: 

  • First-hand experience of working in the pharmaceutical industry or contract research environment. 


Desirable:

  • Knowledge of the regulatory environment for pharmaceuticals.

 

Animals in research

Essential: 

  • Excellent understanding of the use of animals in drug development.
  • Demonstrable commitment to the 3Rs.

  

Influencing and communication skills

Essential:

  • Proven ability to influence at high level and to represent the NC3Rs externally in a range of forums.
  • Wide range of industry contacts.
  • Excellent communicator both orally and in writing.

Based in central London, the Programme Manager will report to Dr Vicky Robinson, NC3Rs Chief Executive. A service agreement exists between the NC3Rs and the Medical Research Council (MRC). The Programme Manager will be appointed to MRC band 3 level with immediate secondment to the NC3Rs.

There will be no formal staff management responsibilities but the post holder will be expected to oversee work delegated to junior staff.
