Overall purpose:

The post supports an MRC-funded research programme to study molecular mechanisms of epigenetic reprogramming. The group uses mouse developmental models (early mouse zygotes and developing early mouse germ line) to investigate key molecular players implicated in the erasure of epigenetic information. https://lms.mrc.ac.uk/research-group/reprogramming-and-chromatin/

Main duties / key responsibilities:

  • Assist in running the laboratory, including the ordering of equipment and reagents
  • Maintain the catalogues of available reagents in the laboratory
  • Take responsibility for Health and Safety training/induction of the new members of the laboratory and for the update of risk assessment forms
  • Learn all necessary techniques including early mouse embryo manipulation, IVF,    preimplantation embryo culture, mouse embryonic stem cell (ESC) and mouse embryonic germ cell (EGC) derivation and culture, early PGC dissection and other methods commonly used in the laboratory
  • Collaborate with other group members and contribute to related projects
  • Contribute to the main scientific programme of the group by performing independent experiments (supervised by Professor P Hajkova)
  • Write, present and publish work in peer-reviewed journals

The post holder will work closely with and will be directly responsible to the Group Head: Professor Petra Hajkova

Education / Qualifications / Training required (will be assessed from application form and at interview):

Essential:

  • MSc degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology (or equivalent experience)
  • Home Office Personal licence to work with laboratory animals

Desirable:

  • PhD in Molecular Biology

Previous work experience required (will be assessed from application form and at interview):

Essential:

  • Proven laboratory experience using a variety of molecular biology techniques
  • Extensive experience in working with rodent animal models
  • Extensive cell culture experience to include mammalian cells (preferentially to include experience with mouse ESC culture)
  • Strong attention to detail and focus on high quality work

Knowledge and experience (will be assessed from application form and at interview):

Essential:

  • Ability to organise time effectively, prioritise and work to deadlines
  • Ability to accurately document work and write technical reports and protocols

Personal skills/behaviours/qualities (will be assessed at interview):

Essential:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other group members
  • Ability to present work at group meetings
