The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is one of the birthplaces of modern molecular biology and has played an important role in the development of many new techniques, most notably protein crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, DNA sequencing and monoclonal antibodies. The LMB has a clear goal of understanding biological processes at the molecular level, with the ultimate aim of using this knowledge to tackle specific problems in human health and disease. We aim to tackle difficult, long-term problems, which often require investment over many years.

There are four scientific Divisions - Structural Studies, Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry, Cell Biology and Neurobiology. However, scientific collaboration between the different Divisions is extensive. Scientists are well supported by excellent scientific facilities and by the LMB Operations Group which maintains the core infrastructure and services of the institute.

Overall purpose:

In this role you will be a key member of the small Information Technology (IT) team which is responsible for ensuring the day-to-day provision and maintenance of effective and efficient IT services across the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB). You will contribute to resolving all software and hardware systems as well as providing systems and applications support to around 850 users.

Main duties/ Key responsibilities:

•    To be responsible, with the Deputy Head of IT, for providing an IT infrastructure which ensures optimal functioning of the LMB’s scientific programme.

•    To provide 1st and 2nd line IT support to members of the LMB and an offsite animal facility.

•    To install a wide range of software packages for Windows and Apple computers.

•    To troubleshoot and repair Windows and Apple products, both hardware and software.

•    To communicate with users to ascertain any problems they might have, set out solutions and provide user training.

•    To action support tickets and phone calls efficiently within an appropriate timeframe.

•    To troubleshoot and repair printers.

•    To configure and install VOIP phones (Mitel) and perform repairs when needed.

•    To perform basic network tasks such as patching.

•    To support the building’s Audio-Visual systems, including assisting with running of scientific seminars in the lecture theatre when required.

Working relationships:

You will report to the Deputy Head of IT.

You will be required to communicate with and develop a professional working relationship with all IT users, i.e. staff (including scientists and management), students and visiting workers to ascertain any problems they might be having and set out solutions and provide user training.

You will negotiate with outside companies to ensure effective and efficient supplier provision and on-going maintenance when this is supplied by external contractors.

Education / qualifications / training required:

Essential:
•    A degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent experience working in 1st and 2nd line support.
•    Training or experience with MacOS, Windows and computing hardware.

Desirable:
•    Qualified Apple or Dell Service Engineer.
•    Training or experience in database management.
•    Junos or CCNA training.

Previous work experience required:

Essential:
•    Experience of working in a busy IT department.
•    Experience of troubleshooting and repairing Windows and/or Apple computers, both hardware and software.
•    Experience of providing AV Support.

Knowledge and experience:

Essential:
•    A good, up to date, working knowledge of current computer hardware.
•    Network administration. Including management of layer 3 switches and routers (eg. Juniper or Cisco).
•    Data entry skills.

Desirable:
Experience in any of the following:

•    VMware vSphere
•    Veeam backup and replication
•    Apple and Dell Hardware
•    Archiware P5 or similar backup solutions
•    Fortinet firewalls
•    Encryption and decryption techniques using Bitlocker and Filevault
•    Windows Server / Client
•    Linux command line
•    BitDefender or similar anti-virus applications
•    Mobile Device Management eg. JAMF
•    FileMaker Pro Server / Client or other relevant database applications
•    Web Technologies; Apache, PHP, MySQL, Postgres
•    Networking Protocols; TCP/IP, SMB, NFS, VLANS, ISCSI, WiFi and VOIP
•    Network cabling – CAT6/6A, multimode and single mode fiber
•    VOIP phone systems
•    ISILON or similar network storage technologies

Personal skills / behaviours / qualities:

Essential:
•    Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with users at all levels and contractors.
•    Strong customer service skills and experience.
•    Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as a team using own initiative when needed.
•    A can-do proactive approach to work and a willingness and enthusiasm to help others use IT effectively.
•    Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work to deal with several projects simultaneously.
•    Ability to work to strict deadlines with minimal supervision.
•    A willingness to learn and develop skills in areas useful to the LMB.
