Overall purpose:  

To work with scientific researchers in order to look after the health and welfare of colonies of experimental mice. This work includes animal handling, daily husbandry duties and keeping accurate computerised records. All work is governed by the local Ethical Committee and the Home Office under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act. 

Main duties / key responsibilities:

•           Checking the health and welfare of experimental mice

•           Possible addition to the cleaning and watering of animal cages rota

•           Addressing the welfare needs of mouse colonies

•           Maintaining cleanliness in the animal rooms

•           Computerised record keeping

•           Reading and adhering to SOPs and risk assessments 

Working relationships:  

Member of a team working under supervision of senior personnel 

Additional information: 

Must be able to work overtime to cover animal requirements

Essential:

5 GCSE’s at grade C or above (or equivalent)

Good communications skills, attention to detail, genuine interest in the welfare of animals, basic computer skills and experience of working as part of a team

The applicant should be able to work as part of a team and work under the supervision of senior personnel 

Desirable:

Basic animal husbandry

Experience of works to SOPs and computerised record keeping
