The LMS is directly funded by the Medical Research Council, and associated with Imperial College. The LMS provide excellent core facilities and support structures, including automated microscopy systems, next generation sequence and proteomics. The Cell Proliferation Group is part of the Epigenetics Section and interacts with other groups in the LMS studying cell cycle, cancer, and chromatin organisation.

The post holder will be directly responsible to as well as work closely with Group Head, Prof Jesus Gil. The post holder is also expected to form good working relationships with members of the Cell Proliferation group.

Research background

Senescence is a stress response by which damaged or old cells implement and stable cell cycle arrest. Senescence is accompanied by specific phenotypic changes such as the production of a complex mixture of secreted factors (known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype or SASP). Senescent cells accumulate during ageing and are also present in preneoplasic and fibrotic tissue. Recent research suggests that senescent cells influence multiple pathologies and the selective elimination of senescent cells can be used as therapy for these senescence-associated diseases. Our research programs aims at understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying senescence and its associated phenotypes. In general terms we are interested in understanding the molecular pathways regulating senescence and understanding the function of regulation of the SASP. This will provide a basis to develop strategies for the selective elimination of senescent cells. For more information about our research, please visit:


Job Summary

This post provides an opportunity for a highly-motivated individual to be part of a project aiming to identify and characterize novel mechanisms regulating senescence and the SASP. The post is for 1 year (in the first instance) and is being funded by the Medical Research Council.

Main duties / key responsibilities

The specific duties of the post holder are as follows:

• To be able to conduct research in accordance to the project.

• To actively contribute to the smooth running of the laboratory in co-ordination with other members of the group

• To form a good working relationship with other members of the group and actively participate in team work.

• To design and carry out scientific experiments in accordance with the group projects

• To analyse, manage and communicate data, ensuring the validity and reliability of the data at all times

• To generate reagents for the group projects

• To maintain organised and accurate records of experimental data

• To actively participate in the group’s research meetings and other research meetings related to the project.

Other duties will include:

• To undertake appropriate administrative tasks as required

• To undertake any necessary training and/or development

Working relationships:

The postholder will work closely and be directly responsible to Professor Gil.

Education / Qualifications / Training required:


• A PhD in a Life Science or Biomedical discipline

• Being first author of a research paper already published or in press


• A Home Office Personal Licence

Previous work experience required:


• Experience in molecular biology (cloning, PCR, IF, IHC, etc).

• Experience in cell biology


• Experience with genetic or drug screening

• Experience with RNAi, CRISPR

• Experience in mouse work

• Experience with lentiviral or retroviral expression systems

• Experience with high throughpiut microscopy systems (such as InCell 2000)

Knowledge and experience:


• Ability to plan ahead and organise time effectively

• Ability to accurately document work and keep clear records of the experiments being performed

• Ability to design new lines of experiments

• Ability to troubleshoot technical difficulties

• Excellent analytical skills

• Good working knowledge of standard software and scientific applications with basic concepts of statistics and bioinformatics

• Strong attention to detail and focus on high quality work

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other members of the group


• Good written and verbal communication skills


*Salary quoted is inclusive of London weighting. A £1,000 lump sum Settlement Allowance will be paid on taking up the post.
